Ku-ring-gai Male Choir - Two Choirs: A Choral Celebration!

The Ku-ring-gai Male Choir and The Australian Welsh Male Choir are bringing their new show "Two Choirs: A Choral Celebration" to the Showroom at Hornsby RSL Club. This year's show will entail a range of special pieces and many favourites, in Welsh, English and of course all parts of the world! Both choirs are thrilled to have Anita Kyle and Lucinda Beck as associate artists, with renowned conductors, Paul Whiting OAM and Tom Buchanan OAM as well as accompanists Hank Xiang and Michelle Nguyen. We invite you to join us for a spectacular choral celebration...

ANITA KYLE, Soprano

Lyric Soprano, Anita Kyle received her L.Mus.A Diploma while studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and attended international summer schools in Graz and Salzburg. She won the National Operatic Aria in Canberra and the 'MTO German-Australian Opera Grant' in Melbourne; a l2-month solo contract at the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden, Germany.  Since returning to Sydney, Anita has performed as an oratorio soloist with the Sydney University Graduate Choir and Manly-Warringah Choir and in recitals for local classical music clubs.

LUCINDA BECK, Soprano

A classically trained singer, actor and voice artist, Lucinda has grown up performing everything from comedy, musicals, jazz, and opera. Lucinda's recent stage credits include the Sydney season of The Sound Of Music (Gordon Frost Organisation), playing a nun at The Capitol Theatre, and cabaret performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals as well as the London Underbelly Festival.

HANK XIANG, Accompanist

Hank graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a B.Mus (Hons) and continued his studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St Petersburg, Russia. He was a finalist in the Australian National Piano Award of 2018 and most recently, was the third prize winner of the Maria Yudina International Piano Competition in 2019 in Russia. Hank has performed in iconic concert Halls across Australia and Europe and has worked as soloist with several orchestras in St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. He is also an active chamber musician. As of 2019,Hank has settled in Sydney and has teaching studios in the Sutherland Shire and Glebe.

MICHELLE NGUYEN, Accompanist

Michelle Nguyen graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 2013 having completed her Bachelor of Music (Honours) and Master of Music (Performance). During her studies she was the recipient of several scholarships including the Gardiner, Grace Funston, Faculty Merit and John Hellyar scholarships.

Following her studies, Michelle was awarded the Robert and Elizabeth Albert Piano Fellowship (2014) with The Australian Ballet, working in Melbourne and Sydney. Other touring engagements as an accompanist include Houston Ballet's Summer Intensive (2015), the Australian Welsh Male Choir's tours through Asia (2017) and the United Kingdom (2018), The Australian Ballet's Regional Tour (2018), Excelsis Choir's Philippines Tour and JTM Production's Practically Perfect through regional Australia (2019).

As a Melbourne pianist, Michelle has been a pit musician for productions including Disney's 'Aladdin,' Gordon Frost Organisation's 'Wizard of Oz,' 'An American in New York' and recently '9 to 5' Michelle is regularly engaged by solo musicians in schools, universities and various  professional engagements as an accompanist.  

DR PAUL WHITING OAM, Musical Director

Dr Paul Whiting (MA (Hons);Dip Ed; LMus; ThC; PhD) studied music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the University of Sydney. He plays piano and organ, and has conducted the Ku-ring-gai Male Choir since 2000. Dr Whiting was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2015 Australia Day honours list for service to the community through choral music.

TOM BUCHANAN OAM, Musical Director

Tom is a well-known and highly regarded Melbourne-based choral conductor, currently directing the Australian Welsh Male Choir, Excelsis and the newly established Mornington Peninsula Ladies Welsh Choir. In recent years Tom has conducted performances extensively throughout Australia, as well as performing internationally in the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the USA. In addition to his experience as a choral conductor, Tom has also had the opportunity to conduct both professional and community orchestras in some of Melbourne's major performance venues, including St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Frankston Arts Centre.

Tom has enjoyed having the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the world's most eminent Welsh choir conductors and is a passionate supporter of community music. He enjoys the challenge of working with a diverse range of choristers, with varying levels of musical training, to produce exciting and engaging choral performances.
